Glyn Jones Donation

Mr Glyn Jones is a local historian who recently kindly donated items to the Archives and Special Collections at Bangor University.  Notable amongst this donation was a scrap-book following the history of Sir William Vincent (1866-1941), Home Member of the Government of India and President of the Viceroy’s Council, a position he held from April 1917 until 1922.

Sir William Vincent was responsible for writing the initial proposals for the progression of India to self-government over a thirty year period. He later served on the Montagu Commission which led to the 1919 India Act which established the new Legislative Assembly of the Government of India.  Sir William served through the most critical and turbulent period of India’s modern history, and was appointed a Knight Commander of the Star of India in 1918.

The Vincent family lived in North Wales on a small estate on the outskirts of Bangor, Treborth Uchaf.  The family were prominent members of the North Wales gentry.

The scrap-book was donated as a token of appreciation of the help and support supplied by the staff of the library and archives service of Bangor University

Digimap Ordnance Survey

Data Download adds OS MasterMap and Boundaries

The Data Download facility within the Digimap Ordnance Survey Collection has been updated. The following datasets have been added to the existing service:
  • OS MasterMap® Topography Layer
  • OS MasterMap® ITN (Integrated Transport Network™) Layer
  • Boundary-Line™
  • Codepoint®
  • Codepoint® with Polygons
  • National Boundaries
  • National Grids
MasterMap Download and Boundary Download will continue to run until the end of May 2013, after which they will be removed from service.
Users should find it quicker and easier to get required data from Data Download, and we have made it easier to come back and get updated versions or different formats.
This functionality can be found in the My Previous Downloads section where you can also make a Change Only Update (COU) to your OS MasterMap data. See this blog post for more details:
Another improvement of getting OS MasterMap data from Data Download is that the interface allows you to select data from previous years, going back to 2009.
By selecting an area, adding MasterMap data from 2009, then using the Add more data button, you can include more MasterMap data from different dates. This is a useful feature for studying how an area has changed over time.

Taylor & Francis Online

*Update to the Access Indicators on Taylor & Francis Online*

 * The partial indicator is changing to half green and half white to illustrate partial access (half full)

* The free and OA indicators are going green – the user has access to this content so the colour change removes the barrier for users who question whether or not they have access. The distinction in the description is being retained.

* Change the colour of no access to white, in keeping with informal standards in use by other publishers.
